Why We Exist

We share our passion for the ocean and surfing with other black and brown women to restore confidence that we all have a birthright to enjoy the sea.

Textured Waves was born out of the necessity to fill the visual void in surfing. We all fell in love with surfing individually, but as we surfed in our respective regions, we realized we were missing a sense of community. This drove us to take reigns and create the visual we were not given. Our initial movement rippled into a global community of BIPOC female surfers who come together around their shared love for the ocean and shifting the narrative.

Our values are deeply rooted in the celebration of inclusive, diverse community, sisterhood, and the adventurous spirit.

Meet Martina Duran

Florida born and raised, Martina was an ocean lover from day one. Although she began surfing later in life, she spent the majority of her childhood swimming and playing along the coast of FL. She picked up a surfboard in college and the rest was history. Her passion for the ocean and surfing brought her to Hawaii where she currently resides. While living in Hawaii she was an active member of Surfrider Oahu, Chairing and helping revitalize the Blue Water Task Force program on island--over 2 years she oversaw and helped testing to monitor water quality for Oahu's beaches. When she is not surfing, she enjoys Outrigger Canoe Racing in both the 6-man and 1-man divisions.
